Mission and Strategic Plan

TBEC will be recognized widely as a significant force in the efforts to ensure that Texas will have the most educated, competitive, well-rounded workforce in the world.

The TBEC mission is to convene business and education leaders to confront Texas with the realities of the global economy, to impact public policy, and to change public education.

To that end, TBEC will work to ensure that Texas has or demonstrates:

  • Achievement standards that define the knowledge and skills Texas students need for success in education and to compete in the global economy;
  • Functional literacy in English and other language for all students;
  • A substantial increase in the number of students completing advanced courses and programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, with an emphasis on practical application to real world and workplace situations;
  • Career and technical education programs that are integrated with a solid academic foundation, meet industry standards, address employer needs, use emerging technologies, and provide students vertically aligned courses of study that begin in high school and continue into colleges and universities;
  • Student assessment programs and accountability systems that drive and support improvement in public schools, colleges and universities;
  • Policies, programs and actions that provide reasonable opportunities for people who have successful experience in business, the military and other endeavors to teach in public schools colleges and universities; and
  • Policies that maintain a reasonable balance between state and community responsibility for publi schools, colleges and universities.

TBEC will be actively engaged in:

  • Building awareness of the workforce needs of business, the educational prearation needed for job and career opportunities, and the importance of public education to the economic and social well-being of Texas;
  • Providing state, regional and local opportunities for dialogue among business, community and education leaders;
  • Identifying public policy issues to be addressed, making recommendations, advocating for enactment, and supporting implementation, including funding as justified;
  • Supporting actions by business-public education partnerships and systemic initiatives by P-16 education councils; and
  • Reporting annually to the public on the progress Texas is making toward accomplishing TBEC's goals for the state.
